Emmerdale fans were left incredibly unhappy this evening after Vanessa Woodfield (played by Michelle Hardwick) found out Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) had kissed another person and demanded they spend some time apart from one another. With their relationship hanging in the balance, the soap went onto tease a further liaison between Charity and newcomer Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb). Could the Woolpack barmaid move on so easily after everything she and Vanessa have been through?

In a video posted to Emmerdale’s Twitter account, the newcomer says: “Hi guys, my name is Lawrence Robb, we’re not sure whether Natalie and I are related yet but we’re working on it! And I’m playing Mackenzie.

“Mackenzie is Moira’s brother, he just wants to come in and let it be known she’s not going to get away from the past mistakes she’s made.

“I’ve come to let Moira know that unfortunately, our mother is no longer with us.

“On my way here I decide I am not going to do that right away, I’m going to try and extort some money from her…I do that by kidnapping her husband,” he added.

As for why he has decided to show up now, the actor said: “He’s got a bit of a chip on his shoulder with Moira; he comes in with a preemptive idea of what she’s like and what she did.

“She then tells him that it’s not necessarily what he’s been told,” Lawrence explained.

“He’s spent his entire life – up until this point – believing one thing about her and that’s been saturated in his head.

“He’s a very damaged young man and there’s quite a lot of baggage there that is too far gone and too heavy for him to toss aside.”

Viewers first saw him when he collided with Charity down a lane: “He definitely didn’t anticipate crashing the car.

“And he definitely didn’t anticipate liking Charity in the way that he does!

“I’ve got a good few scenes to film with Emma, and we will just have to wait and see whether the spark develops any further,” the newcomer teased.

But fans of Emmerdale were not happy with the suggestion that something more than just a kiss could happen between Mackenzie and Charity.

Commenting below the Twitter video, one said: “Keep him the f**k away from Charity. There was no chemistry between them. Their scenes were absolute cringe & incredibly forced because that is not who she is anymore. Charity has grown out of bad boys. Trying to force her backwards is tragic & boring & insulting.”

“How about he finds a woman his own age, oh and a single woman too,” someone else chimed.

A third wrote: “How about for a change if you want to romantically involved him with someone you have him with another single character? He and charity have no chemistry. It’s so forced this story #emmerdale.”

@emmerdale Could you please explain why you have chosen to have Charity kiss, Mackenzie?

“You have let the entire fandom down massively, not to mention the way you have let yourselves down,” a viewer commented.

As for whether Charity and Vanessa’s relationship is salvageable, fans will have to tune into upcoming episodes.

They’ll also find out the truth between Mackenzie and Moira…

Emmerdale airs weekday evenings at 7pm on ITV.
