Dexter reboot confirmed with Michael C Hall returning as serial killer

Long-running series Dexter will be making a grand comeback to screens as a surprise reboot is confirmed.

Michael C Hall will reprise his famed role as Dexter Morgan, the moonlighting serial killer whose day job is as a blood spatter expert within the local police department.

The exciting news comes seven years after Dexter aired its final episode and Showtime has announced it will return with 10 new episodes.

Confirming the reboot, Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine said in a statement: ‘Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for SHOWTIME, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago.

‘We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series.’

He added: ‘Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!’

Filming is expected to begin in early 2021 with a view to debut the new season later in the year.

Dexter originally ran between 2006 and 2013 and starred Hall alongside Jennifer Carpenter who, at one point, was the actor’s wife in real life.

*** SPOILER ***

There’s been no word on Jennifer’s involvement in the reboot but that’s highly unlikely given the way her story ended in the finale episode.

Deb, the killer’s sister, suffered a gunshot wound and was being kept alive on a ventilator. Realising his beloved sister would have no real quality of life, he decided to pull the plug and professed his love for her before she flatlined.

After packing his son Harrison off for a new life in Argentina, Dexter faked his own death and assumed a new identity in Oregon with a new job as… a lumberjack.

He did take Debra’s body with him though…

Dexter won several awards during its time on-screen, including the best performance by an actor in a drama series Golden Globe for Hall and the supporting gong for John Lithgow.
