Corrie sign stars to bumper new contracts to secure soap's future

CORONATION Street’s biggest stars are staying on the cobbles after bosses persuaded them to sign up to bumper new deals.

Bill Roache, 88, Michael Le Vell, 55, Simon Gregson, 46, Sally Dynevor, 57, and Sue Cleaver, also 57, have all put pen to fresh contracts.

It means the show’s millions of viewers can celebrate its 60th birthday next Wednesday knowing their favourites will be around for at least another year.

A source said: “These are the lifeblood of the show and, frankly, it would not be Corrie without them.

“Despite a difficult year, bosses were delighted when they agreed deals, keeping them on screen until at least 2021.

“Between them, they have given nearly 200 years to the show.”

Some of the older cast — including Barbara Knox, 87, and Bill — had to keep away from the ITV set during the early days of Covid.

Bill, who has played Ken Barlow since the first episode, received an updated Guinness World Record last month for being in the role for six decades.

He recently told The Sun he believes he can play Ken beyond his 100th birthday.

June Brown, who was Dot Cotton on rival EastEnders, recently quit at 93.
