The Karate Kid sequel series returned to Netflix for more mind-blowing martial arts action at the end of 2021, which concluded with a surprising result for the All Valley Tournament final. Now Miguel Diaz (played by Xolo Maridueña) has left for Mexico to do some much-needed soul-searching, will Cobra Kai ever be the same again?

Miguel’s future on the series remains unclear after stepping out on his father figure Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at the end of season four.

Just when the All Valley needed him most, he suffered a nasty pulled muscle during his battle with Hawk (Jacob Bertrand).

Although he was eventually cleared to fight, Miguel decided he had had enough and disappeared before his next chance to enter the ring.

Just before the credits rolled on another powerful season of Cobra Kai, Johnny and Miguel’s mother Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) discovered he had set off to Mexico in search of his absent father.

Will Miguel’s search yield the answers he’s looking for, or will he find himself in a whole new world of trouble when the nostalgic action series returns for season five?

Opening up about his character’s path with Variety, Cobra Kai breakout Xolo has revealed what he thought about the latest stunning revelations in the finale.

He explained his decisions stemmed from Johnny’s drunken confession the night before the fateful Tournament.

Miguel’s sensei admits he had been a better father figure, but Johnny was actually referring to his strange son, Robby (Tanner Buchanan).

“In that moment, Miguel thinks he’s talking to him, but really he’s not,” Xolo recalled.

He also pointed out their conversation later at the Tournament itself as piling on even more pressure on Johnny’s young student.

Xolo continued: “Johnny is telling him, ‘Don’t you want to do this?

“‘We need Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do to be on top. We gotta get Cobra Kai out of here.’

“Seeing the person he wants validation from the most, the person whom he admires the most, whom he wants to make proud, is almost using him as a pawn at this point to prove a point.”

Johnny has been living vicariously through Miguel ever since he originally re-opened the Cobra Kai dojo at the start of the series.

After the karate class has been taken over by his violent mentor John Kreese (Martin Kove) and now, his even more deranged partner Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), he’ll stop at nothing to put an end to its reign of terror.

Unfortunately, his plan has made punching bags out of some of his students, with Miguel bearing the brunt of their losses so far.

Still though, should this give him the right to bail on his sensei and fellow students just as Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang are preparing for their hardest battle yet?

Xolo admitted: “Honestly, Miguel is crazy for not telling anyone and going out there.

“What a dumb high-school decision, but I hope it pans out for him.”

Hopefully, Miguel finds his father and gets the closure he’s looking for, but Johnny and Carmen have a tough road ahead while they wait for the day he comes home.

Cobra Kai seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
