Chrissy Teigen Will Be Replaced in Netflix's 'Never Have I Ever'
In this age of canceling public figures, Chrissy Teigen’s been taking some hits to her public image and brand. The model/entrepreneur has been silent on social media since tweeting an apology aimed at Courtney Stodden. Teigen’s faced multiple accusations of cyber-bullying Stodden and others, including Lindsay Lohan and actor Quvenzhané Wallis when she was only 9 years old. Now, she’s dropped out of a Netflix production.
Chrissy Teigen departs Netflix’s ‘Never Have I Ever’
Mindy Kaling’s popular teen coming-of-age dramedy Never Have I Ever soared with viewers in 2020. Chrissy Teigen was tapped for a guest voiceover spot in season 2 for an undisclosed part, and according to Deadline, she’s being replaced.
The episode already filmed with Teigen, but the part is going to go to someone else. A series spokesperson told the outlet, “Chrissy Teigen has decided to step away from a guest voiceover role in one episode of the upcoming second season of Never Have I Ever. They added that “the role is expected to be recast.”
When Netflix released screeners for season 2 of the series around May 5, the company requested that reviewers keep Teigen’s narrator cameo under wraps. One week later, the bullying controversy erupted on social media. Teigen has not been active on Twitter or Instagram since May 12.
When Courtney Stodden’s interview went viral, it ignited a discussion about some of Teigen’s past online deeds. Saturday Night Live and former Real Housewives cast member Kelly Dodd took a swipe at her, and she also received a flurry of criticism on her Instagram page.
Macy’s pulled her cookware line from its website without any explanation, and Bloomingdale’s reportedly canceled a promotional even with Teigen. Further, vacation rental home service VRBO encountered some blowback for featuring her and John Legend in one of their commercials.
‘Never Have I Ever’ Season 2 drops in July
On another note, the show must go on. After season 1 launched, Netflix boasted stats for Never Have I Ever. It streamed in 40 million households during its first month on the platform and scored major points with fans. Netflix renewed the show in 2020, and season 2 debuts in July 2021. The next installment will follow Devi’s budding love life as she’s stuck in a love triangle with Ben and Paxton.
The show stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar, a high school student who’s grieving her father while navigating the everyday woes of teenage life, cultural traditions, and family discord.
Kaling co-produces the show with Lang Fisher, and season 1 brought out tennis pro John McEnroe as its surprise narrator. It works for the story, and he’s returning for season 2. How do we know? The cast recently streamed a live season 2 table read for charity, which can be viewed on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
Kaling, Fisher, and McEnroe joined Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, Darren Barnet, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Richa Moorjani, and Jaren Lewison for the event that covered scenes from season 2 episode 1. Viewers can get ready for more awkward teen romance and strict parenting from Devi’s mom. Fans can re-watch Never Have I Ever Season 1 on Netflix.
