The star of Celebrity Gogglebox and ex-Tory MP, 73, said the Beeb has to earn the £159 fee. He said: “If they’re the public-service broadcaster, they have to do the public-service thing. If they want the advantages of being a public-service broadcaster, which is having billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money coming your way, you’ve got to earn it.”

And he also told Radio Times, on sale today, that entertaining and educating older people is “central to the public service. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

All viewers aged 75 and over have to stump up the licence, unless on Pension Credit. It is said 900,000 people receive the benefit, but a further 1.5 million could be eligible but do not claim.
