Alison Hammond and Joey Essex in tears after sharing experiences of grief
Alison Hammond and Joey Essex were left holding back tears on Wednesday’s This Morning, after the pair both shared their experiences of grief in touching scenes.
Former Towie star Joey was appearing on the show to discuss his powerful new documentary Grief and Me, which sees him open up for the first time about losing his mum.
The new film sees the 30-year-old go to therapy after his mum Tina took her own life while battling depression when he was 10 years old.
The emotional film sees Joey explore how losing his mother continues to shape his life, even revealing that he fears girlfriends will leave him just as he felt his mother did.
Joey spoke openly to Alison and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning about the impact it has had on his life, causing Alison to tear up.
‘When I watched the documentary it actually stopped me in my tracks,’ Alison said. ‘I didn’t lose my mum at age 10. I can’t imagine you going through that. I lost my mum as an adult.’
She added: ‘There was a moment you said “I’d give all of the fame and the fortune up for one hour with my mum.”’
‘It just killed me. It’s killing me now, sorry’ added Alison, who was visibly emotional.
‘I want to give you a hug,’ Joey said.
It comes after Joey previously opened up to Metro.co.uk and other press about his memories surrounding his mum are ‘dark and negative’.
‘All the memories that I always think about, they’re all negative, they’re all negative. I remember being at my mum’s funeral when I was 10 years old… All my memories from my mum are negative or dark, depressing, horrible memories,’ he said.
Joey also spoke about the way he would often try to ‘fill a gap’ as a younger man, spending money in an attempt to distract from the grief he was experiencing.
‘I’ve always tried to fill a gap. Getting money in my life, that’s what I did. I bought a Lamborghini out of anger. Because I was upset at the time,’ he said.
‘That’s what I’ve done in my life, just spend money and thrown it away because I can’t fill that gap. But obviously that doesn’t solve the problem at all. I think for me, I need to find happiness. I need to start dealing with the grief.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 6am on ITV. Joey Essex: Grief and Me will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am on June 3 and air on BBC One at 9pm.
