Why New Mom Keke Palmer Calls the 'Celebrity Snap Back' Unrealistic for Most, But Necessary for Women in Hollywood
Keke Palmer welcomed her first son in February, and just six months later, she’s got her “pre-baby” body back, she looks phenomenal — and she wants you to know that it’s completely unrealistic.
Demystifying the “celebrity snap back” on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, the entertainment multi-hyphenate urged non-famous folks to see that the warp speed at which celebrity women sculpt their post-baby bodies back into pre-baby shape is “part of the damn gig.”
“Anytime you see a celebrity doing a snap back or whatever like that, it’s part of the damn gig,” Palmer explained. “A part of our jobs is to look good and to look the part. So don’t think it’s this thing where it’s like, ‘We doing it because we got it like that.’ No, the job is on the line,” she said. Putting it even more bluntly, the “Nope” actress added, “If we want the checks to get signed, we got to be what we got to be.”
The former child star expressed that the last thing she wants to do with her own snap back is to make other new moms feel bad about where they’re at with their postpartum journey. “It is my job [to be fit],” Palmer said. “Let’s not get crazy — I don’t want people thinking that I am setting unrealistic standards.”
“I never want to put it on anybody,” Palmer continued. “I always want to make it clear that when I am talking about fitness, health, and wellness, it’s that your journey is your journey. You figure it out the way you can. And when you look at these celebrities and people in the industry, know that it is their job,” the new mom shared.
Becoming a Mother
Palmer and her boyfriend Darius Jackson welcomed their first child in late February, and the new mom announced his arrival and name on Instagram.
“Hey Son!!!!” she wrote, adding, “LEODIS ANDRELLTON JACKSON, welcome to the world baby Leo.” Alongside the caption, Palmer shared several photos of the newborn and their journey from hospital to home.
Postpartum Is Personal
In April, the new mom spoke with People about motherhood and the postpartum period. “There’s always this thing of, ‘How’d they do it?’” Palmer said, adding, “And I think for me, the main thing I would say to any new mom is do what you can when you can, whatever it is that makes you feel good.”
Of “bouncing back” post-baby, the Nickelodeon alum shared, “If it’s important to you, then hell yeah, put in the work Miss Girl. Get you whatever diet you want to do or whatever workout regimen that works for you.” Palmer added, “And if that’s not what you’re worried about, then don’t worry about it.”
Take Your Time
The mom of one also assured fans she didn’t hit the ground running right after bringing Leo home. She told People that during the first few weeks after giving birth, “I didn’t want to do nothing. I didn’t want to talk to nobody.”
After a bit more time had passed, Palmer felt eager to begin exercising again. “It changes, so go at your own pace,” she encouraged other new moms.
