Wetherspoons customers could lose their local as 22 more pubs at risk of closure

The popular pub company, better known as “Spoons”, announced the sale of 32 sites back in September 2022.

Since the start of the year, JD Wetherspoons has lost 29 of its sites and has expanded the closures to include a further 22 pubs.

While not all of them have confirmed sales, one has already gone ahead with a second expected to follow later this month.

On July 30, The Saltoun Inn in Scotland shut its doors for the final time and The Bankers Draft in Eltham, in London will follow on August 20.

Out of its 827 pubs which are dotted across the UK, the hospitality chain revealed that “almost all” of the pubs facing closure were located in close proximity to other Wetherspoons.

They claimed that the decision to reduce its portfolio was due to “difficult trading circumstances for the hospitality industry in recent years”.

However, according to recent reports, Wetherspoons sales are now 11 percent higher than those recorded before the pandemic in 2018-19, despite owner Tim Martin’s claims that customers now prefer to drink at home.

Of the 22 pubs at risk of being axed this year, 13 of them are listed as “under offer”, while nine of them are listed as “for sale”.
