New Balance Celebrates the 990 Line with a 990 "Version 1" and 990v2 "Version 2"

New Balance is celebrating the nearly 40-year long history of its beloved 990 line with a 990 “Version 1” and a 990v2 “Version 2.” Though almost two decades separate the 990 and 990v2 — the former made its debut in 1982, the latter in 1998 — New Balance has used signature gray color schemes, metallic silver detailing and red branding to draw a connecting thread between two eras of 990.

First up is the 990, made entirely of mesh and suede and dressed in steel gray shades. Key details are provided by an all-white midfoot logo, a red “Version 1” hangtag on the quarter plus red branding on the tongue and heel, hits of metallic silver on the heel tab and a supple suede collar lining. Down below, bone-colored heel clips rise above the trim white/black EVA midsole and black outsoles complete the look.

Next, the 990v2 uses gray shades that are more earth than stone on its upper, while also mixing suede, leather and mesh together for a material contrast. A red “Version 2” hangtag is delicately pinned to the lateral quarter behind a metallic silver N logo, red branding hits the tongue and a red “USA” spellout is placed on the heel. ABZORB midsoles add texture by way of a signature oval-like shape under the heel, and are loaded full of comfy cushion to complete the style.

Look for the New Balance 990 “Version 1” and 990v2 “Version 2” to release at retailers like Nice Kicks come July 16. The former is priced at $175 USD, the latter at $185 USD.
