Nadiya Hussain explains how to make banana skin burgers as peel makes perfect substitute for ‘pulled pork’

Nadiya Hussain is nothing if not resourceful when it comes to whipping up interesting recipes, and one that has got everyone talking is how she uses banana skins to make a vegetarian 'pulled pork' dish.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain via video link from her home, Nadiya encouraged people keen to reduce their food wastage during the lockdown period to keep their banana peel to create the unusual meat substitute.

The Great British Bake Off winner, 35, surprised presenters Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid with her recipe idea while talking about how she was coping in isolation and cooking for her three children and husband Abdal.

Nadiya explained why she shared the cooking tutorial which caused a bit of a stir: "Yes I've been cooking banana peel forever. We've always been cooking banana peel.

"It's something completely natural to me, and I thought to myself "Hold on a second, you need to share this"."

She went on to add how you should keep hold of your ripe banana skin which you would normally throw away after you've made banana bread, a very popular recipe people seem to be whipping up in self-isolation.

"Don't chuck the peel away, shred it, cook it up with some garlic, onions and BBQ sauce. Stick it in a burger and you've got pulled pork or pulled chicken. It's amazing!" she continued.

Presenters Ben and Susanna didn't seem to convinced, with Susanna adding: "What you don't mean the skin of a banana do you? I didn't even know that was edible!"

Nadiya also urged those in isolation due to the coronavirus outbreak, to make 'scrap soup' out of vegetable ends and the skins, which many would often throw in the bin after peeling.

The cook, who has six recipe books and a children's book series to her name, said the British public need to change the "way we think about food".

"What we have to do is not worry about cooking these amazing meals and shift the way we think about food and waste. Think about what we would normally put in a compost bin and think, what can we do with it?

"That's what we're doing, I'm using social media as a tool. We’re making scrap soup, putting potato peels and all the ends in a big freezer bag.

"I think we need to stop and think about what we're throwing away and think about how we can use it."

Nadiya has shared the recipe in an Instagram Stories which is pinned to her highlights, where she goes through a detailed step-by-step of how to shred your banana peels and cook them ready to eat in a burger.
