Man credits having jaw broken in brutal bar fight for making him a millionaire
Brandon Thomas Harris was left feeling “depressed” after being caught in a bar fight.
His jaw was completely broken after the brawl in his native Fairbanks, Alaska.
The 36-year-old had his mouth wired shut for eight weeks during his recovery.
He said: “It was just after a cage fighting event at the Carlson Centre. The temperature was below zero and my little brother had just lost his weight belt to a rival team.
“Twenty-four hours of darkness, months of negative weather and a bunch of fighters in a bar. Easy math – a fight breaks out.
“Straight out the gate I take a chair to my jaw, breaking it right through the molar area from one side to the other.”
An ambulance crew was called and arrived at the same time as the local cops.
He said: “They grabbed my jaw and wiggled it around and see that it’s completely broke, so I need to get to the emergency room immediately.”
After seeing an oral surgeon, Brandon had to have his mouth wired shut for eight weeks.
He said: “I became very depressed in the cold, dark winter nights of Alaska – and as my strong jaw and bite faded away I lost all my self-esteem and confidence.
“It was only later I realised my low mood was caused by the loss of what I call my ‘primal bite’.”
After the gruelling period was over, Brandon booked a luxury break to Hawaii.
But in another blow to his health, the paradise trip ended in chaos when he got in a motorbike accident.
The near-lethal tumble left him with more devastating injuries.
He joked: “I figured if I could ride a dirt bike and moped that I could handle one of the fastest production bikes around..
“Maybe I could, but with s*** tires, I had no chance.
“I smashed my skull and suffered serious convulsions.”
Brandon was rushed to hospital where he spent several days in a coma.
He said: “When I came to I didn’t know where I was, my vision was shot and my cognitive skills were shattered.”
Once again, it took months for the young man to get his health back.
But during his recovery, he was inspired to set up the successful business he runs today.
As there was nothing on the market to cater to Brandon’s needs, he decided to create his own product.
He said: “The only thing out there for jaw exercise was your regular pack of gum, which doesn’t make any difference at all – like going for a walk, compared to doing squats."
So in a bid to get his idea off the ground, the budding entrepreneur started talking to industry experts.
He said: ‘For years I talked with anyone that would listen, picking their brains for ideas from on to simulate the biting motion under tension.
‘While my attorney completed the worldwide patent and trademark search I was honing in on a design that met my criteria – safe, convenient, made in the USA, able to be mass-produced and at the same secure multiple patents to protect my life-changing product.
“Durability was all-important, considering the strength of the pound-for-pound strongest muscle in the human body – the masseter.”
After at least 50 prototypes, the final design was complete.
Brandon crowdfunded $10,000 on Kickstarter and was ready to launch his product, which he called Jawzrsize.
He item has since launched in more than 200 countries and the businessman is fast-approaching his millionth happy customer.
The savvy entrepreneur can’t believe how far he’s come over the years – and doesn’t regret any of the accidents he’s had.
He added: “I wouldn’t change anything that ultimately led me down this path.”
