If anyone can accurately predict the hairstyles that we’ll be seeing on Love Island 2021, it’s Carl Bembridge.

The hair maestro calls previous Islanders like Molly-Mae Hague, Maura Higgins and Siânnise Fudge clients and friends, so he's in the know when it comes to trends.

And if you aren’t convinced about the power of good hair, let us cast your attention back to 2019 – the year of Molly-Mae and her mesmerising top knot. It won her a coveted contract with Beauty Works, and a place in our Love Island Hair of Fame.

And the year before, Georgia Steel prompted us all to invest in a faux ponytail after her enviably thick mane became the talking point of Twitter. She’s also worked with top brands like Hair Rehab London since her stint on the show.

So what will we be seeing this year? Keep an eye out for some Romeo Beckham-style buns on the lads, and for some mini front braids made famous by the likes of Olivia Attwood and megababe Kim Kardashian, says Carl.

Read on for more predictions, and inspo for your own summer of love…

The trend: mini front braids

As seen on: Olivia Attwood, Kim Kardashian

Carl says: “Braids and plaits in general are going to be big this summer, as you can add them to most hairstyles for a bit of extra detail. Small braids on the front sections of hair are set to hit it big – so keep an eye out for these!”

Carl says: “Headbands and bandanas are back from the 90s, but now come with a modern twist. They’re perfect tying together an outfit, as you can clash prints or keep the look tonal, and are great for poolside posing because they hide greasy roots.”

The trend: man buns

As seen on: Romeo Beckham, Justin Bieber

Carl says: “If you want that extra swag, a man bun will deliver. Hair bands at the ready, I predict a lot of these in the villa.”

The trend: crimping

As seen on: Maya Jama, Molly-Mae Hague

Carl says: “This year we’re seeing plenty of different types of curls that range from a throwback crimp to a mermaid wave. This style is perfect for wearing in the heat because they don’t tend to drop as fast as big, bouncy curls.”

The trend: curly man texture

As seen on: Harry Styles, Orlando Bloom

Carl says: “Forget the slick look, this summer is all about wavy hair texture – perfect for men with naturally curly hair as all they have to do is scrunch some mousse and go. Keep an eye out for a longer, curly front sections paired with short back and sides.”
