Inside Mandy Moore And Taylor Goldsmith’s Marriage
The world was introduced to Mandy Moore when she was just a 15-year-old girl singing pop songs that were sweet as candy (we couldn’t help it, we had to go there). For over two decades, she’s gained a reputation for being just as sweet a person as her infamous song. She was even on good terms with some of her famous exes after their relationships ended — like the late Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, actor Wilmer Valderrama, and tennis player Andy Roddick, Popsugar reported.
But Moore has had her share of heartbreaks. One of her exes is even allegedly responsible for the fact that Moore went about a decade without releasing any new music. But around 2015, Moore’s life started to change for the better. That’s the year she met her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, the lead singer of the indie rock band Dawes. About a year later, her hit NBC show This Is Us premiered, and the rest is history. Moore and Goldsmith have always been as private as possible with details of their love lives before they met (we do not know of any other famous girlfriends Goldsmith has had). So, it was hard, but we dug up as many sweet (and some salty) details we could find about Taylor Goldsmith and Mandy Moore’s marriage.
Mandy Moore's fateful Instagram post
Mandy Moore essentially played matchmaker for herself without knowing it on May 17, 2015, when she posted a picture of the cover of the Dawes album All Your Favorite Bands, which was released in June 2015. “Real excited about this one,” Moore’s Instagram post said. “Have a feeling it’s going to be the soundtrack of my summer.” Little did she know, she had made the post that would determine the soundtrack of the rest of her life.
“I was like, whoa, this beautiful woman Mandy Moore is like posting about our band,” Goldsmith told CBS This Morning. “And so, [I contacted her and said] ‘if you ever want to come to a show, here’s my email.'” He said he was open to the idea of her flirting with him, but was not expecting her to. “I was like, ‘that was sweet of her to say, here’s our record.'” Three years later, he’d be giving her his hand in marriage.
“We started emailing back and forth, then we went on a date and the rest is history. Thanks Instagram, for helping me meet my fiancé!” Moore told People about what happened after the post. So, if Mandy Moore can fall in love with the lead singer of one of her favorite bands thanks to a simple post on Instagram, there’s hope for all of us, right?
A homey engagement
By Hollywood standards, Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith had a very normal, quiet courtship. Moore told People that Goldsmith went on tour early in their relationship, so, “we spent hours FaceTiming each other. We fell in love before we’d even really held hands or kissed or anything. It was great.” They would occasionally post about each other on Instagram, but rarely made public appearances together.
Two years into their relationship, their engagement was similarly low-key. Journalist Marc Malkin reported via a Facebook post that Goldsmith proposed at their home and a source said that Goldsmith “was petrified.” But as we know, Moore said yes. Later, the “I Wanna Be With You” singer would only tell People that the proposal, “was an emotional moment.” She loved the Irene Neuwirth engagement ring that Goldsmith designed so much that she told its story for InStyle. “We were in the middle of moving into our new home at the time — the whole thing caught me completely off guard,” she said, later describing a unique detail of the ring. “It is so me. I especially love that the diamond is flat — you can see my skin through it, which makes it even more understated.” It’s a beautiful ring and she deserves it.
Taylor Goldsmith was with Mandy Moore when she fulfilled a dream
The couple that climbs mountains together stays together, literally and figuratively. Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith learned as much when they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together with a group of close friends in March 2018. “I have dreamed the dream of climbing Mt Kilimanjaro since the age of 18,” Moore said in an Instagram post about the trip. She was able to fulfill the dream thanks in-part to a partnership with Eddie Bauer. “I lived out one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my life with a few of my best friends.”
Goldsmith shared memories from the trip with CBS This Morning. “I just kind of marched up there and didn’t complain,” he joked. He then shared their different reactions during the ascent. “[Mandy] got emotional, she like cried,” he said. “It was a spiritual moment, more or less. And I was like sitting there looking at her like, ‘I’m not having that.'”
It’s understandable since Goldsmith was probably just there to participate in Moore’s biggest dream with her. At least it happened before the wedding. That wasn’t always Moore’s plan. “I’ve already told Taylor that I may incorporate [climbing Mount Kilimanjaro] into the honeymoon,” she told Shape. Moore later climbed Mount Everest with a group of friends, though Goldsmith couldn’t attend.
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith had a musical matrimony
Taylor Goldsmith and Mandy Moore married on November 18, 2018, in the backyard of their Los Angeles home. Moore, who was previously married to musician Ryan Adams until they officially divorced in 2016 (via People) — wore a blush pink custom Rodarte dress for the occasion. Even before she had decided on the perfect dress, she told People, “I’m kind of confident that it’s not going to be the stereotypical white wedding dress, because it just doesn’t feel the most me.”
The musical couple is so private that many details of their big day are elusive. But Moore told People that there were about 40 guests at the ceremony and a few more at the reception afterward. “We stayed in constant communication with each other,” the “Crush” singer said of her and Goldsmith on the big day. “It was really important for us to be present and really wanted to enjoy the moment.” Moore told People that her favorite memories from the day involved music. One was her brother-in-law Griffin Goldsmith (the drummer in Dawes) singing a John Lennon song as she walked from her bedroom to the backyard to say her vows. She also loved all of the musical moments incorporated into her reception, including singing a duet with her husband Taylor.
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith created an album together
The world was introduced to Mandy Moore as a singer, but before meeting her husband Taylor Goldsmith she hadn’t released music in many years. In 2019, The New York Times reported that Moore chose to stick to acting because her ex-husband, musician Ryan Adams, was allegedly psychologically abusive. “He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument,” Moore told the outlet. “Music was a point of control for him.” She played a big part in the publication’s piece involving several other women corroborating Adams’ behavior. “I want to make music…I’m not going to let Ryan stop me,” Moore said.
Goldsmith encourages and collaborates with Moore musically. The husband and wife co-wrote every song on Moore’s 2020 album Silver Landings. It’s her first record in over a decade. “There wasn’t a question that if I ever made music again it would be with [my husband],” Moore told The New York Times in 2020.
Moore shared a memory of recording with Goldsmith in People. “I was singing in the booth last night. I looked over and he had his eyes closed, playing the guitar. I thought there’s nothing cooler than being able to collaborate in this sort of setting with somebody you love, trust and respect, in the way that I respect him,” she said. “He’s the most talented, having him grace any music that I’m a part of is always a treat.” Brb, we need tissues!
They made sweet live music together during quarantine
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith were meant to go on tour together to promote Moore’s Silver Landings album in early 2020. It would have been the first time Moore was on tour in 13 years, but all of the shows were canceled when the novel coronavirus pandemic hit the US. So, Moore and Goldsmith started playing live music in their living room and broadcast it over Instagram live every week. “It’s been this sort of… catharsis at the end of the week,” Moore said on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “It gives us something to work toward and look forward to. But it is really weird getting used to performing for no one but understanding that people are theoretically watching.”
The couple would trade off singing each other’s material, so it wasn’t exactly like being at a Mandy Moore show. But Moore made headlines when she sang songs like “Only Hope” from A Walk To Remember, the 2002 teen romance she starred in with Shane West. We all miss live shows, but there was something comforting about curling up with a phone, Moore, Goldsmith, and their fur babies every week.
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith have had some fur baby tragedies
Some people say the world is divided into “dog people” and “cat people” — but Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith disagree. They love both animals equally and often share pictures and videos of their pets on Instagram. They’ve also had to endure the sadness that comes when a pet is sick or dies.
The first tragedy happened in 2018 when Moore’s cat Madeline died in her arms the night before her wedding to Goldsmith. “We lost our sweet Madeline very suddenly on Saturday evening and my heart is so utterly broken,” Moore wrote in an Instagram post. “She had an enlarged heart (it had to be true because there wasn’t a sweeter, more affectionate cat in all the land), blood clots formed and sent her into heart failure. Completely out of the blue.” The newlyweds were mourning a fur baby on their wedding day — that’s so sad.
In 2019 they adopted a cat named Olivia that began suffering seizures in 2020. She was taken to the emergency vet, as reported by DailyMail.com. Per Moore’s Instagram story updates, Olivia found the right meds and is doing fine. But in December 2020, the couple lost their dog, Joni. She died suddenly while recovering from surgery on her liver, Moore wrote on Instagram. “She was my first love and best friend. Through every twist and turn of life of this past decade and change, she was right there,” the singer’s tribute post said.
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith struggled to start a family
Mandy Moore announced that she and Taylor Goldsmith were expecting a baby boy in September 2020 on Instagram. “Baby Boy Goldsmith coming early 2021,” the simple post said. It featured several black and white pictures of her husband holding her belly. Moore later revealed to Romper that her journey to get pregnant wasn’t easy. In fact, she said that she had surgery scheduled to get rid of suspected endometriosis right before she got pregnant. “I was fully prepared to go have surgery and fix my uterus and hopefully get rid of the endometriosis, if it was there,” she said. “It was nice to have a plan and to know, ‘OK, well, this is why I haven’t been pregnant yet.'”
Moore was told at a doctor’s appointment that she was ovulating but that there was a “very slim” chance she’d get pregnant. She did. Because of her previous struggles, Moore found the reality of being pregnant hard to believe for a while. “Because of this issue with my uterus, I was very hesitant to believe it and put any stock in it. I sort of was holding my breath until 12 weeks,” she said. Her nerves are totally understandable, but we’re happy her pregnancy seems to be going well and hope the couple has a happy, healthy baby.
Mandy Moore wants to raise a very specific kind of man
During an interview with Romper in 2021, Mandy Moore said that becoming a mom only felt real in her third trimester of pregnancy. “I was online buying pacifiers yesterday and I just turned to my husband and I was like, ‘It’s real,” she explained. While she may or may not be ready for sleepless nights, she’s certainly put thought into the values she wants to instill in her son. “I want to raise an intelligent, feminist, loving, compassionate young man, who respects women, and who understands boundaries.”
He sounds like an awesome person already, and according to Moore, that’s in part because he has an awesome dad in Taylor Goldsmith. “I think he’s been suited to be a father pretty much his whole life,” the This Is Us actress said of her husband. “He’s been gearing up for this. Like in the morning, it’s funny, I’ll reach for my phone and he’ll reach right for whatever baby book he’s reading.” She said that being pregnant during a pandemic has been difficult, but she’s enjoying the time it’s giving her with Goldsmith, who may have otherwise been touring with his band, Dawes. “It would have been fine, but having this experience together makes me feel even more solid and even more excited to be a parent with him.”
