High street bakery giant 'on track' to open 150 shops within months – is one coming near you? | The Sun

A MAJOR high street bakery giant is on track to open over a hundred new shops within months.

The boss of Greggs has said the bakery chain is on track with plans to open 150 new shops across the UK.

The sausage roll seller said it will open new stores in Cornwall and other areas where it currently has fewer sites.

The openings form part of the group's rapid expansion plan which includes a commitment to add 150 new stores to its books by the end of the year.

Greggs currently runs around 2,300 shops across the UK, but said it hopes to expand to more than 3,000 as part of its long-term growth strategy.

The company said it expects to open 150 net new stores this year but is open to accelerating these plans if more sites become available.

It comes after the group opened its fourth shop in Cornwall, in U2 Enterprise Park, Saltash, on Saturday (June 10) as it targets locations where the sausage roll maker has a weaker presence.

Greggs has already opened several new stores in the first half of this year, which are located in:

  • Bedford (drive-thru)
  • Bristol, Gallagher Retail Park
  • Bristol, Primark (Tasty Cafe)
  • Glasgow Airport
  • Newcastle, Primark (Tasty Cafe)
  • Sittingbourne, Kent (drive-thru)
  • Spennymoor, County Durham
  • Ulverston (drive-thru), Beehive Business Park

The following locations are also due to get new Greggs shops in the coming weeks:

Greggs hasn't confirmed the specific dates that these stores will open but we'll do a follow-up story once we know.

Roisin Currie, Greggs' boss, said that she is pleased with the group's progress in opening new sites.

"The opening strategy is going to plan and the new location in Cornwall is a key part of that," she said.

"Obviously we are a brand that started from the North and the natural growth of the business from there means there are some parts of the country, such as in Cornwall and the South West, where we see more scope to open sites."

The new opening comes on top of existing shops in St Austell, Launceston and Truro in the county.

Bosses said that a number of new sites in the expansion plan will target UK tourists and travellers, with openings at travel locations such as forecourts and service stations.

It comes after the group revealed in May that sales surged by nearly a fifth over the start of 2023 as its cheap meals remained "compelling" to cash-strapped consumers.

Greggs opened a record 186 new stores in 2022 and it now operates at more than 2,300 locations.

In March, the bakery giant announced plans for a 24-hour drive-thru service.

But the chain has not yet decided where the trial will take place.

There are currently 17 drive-thru locations across the country and it's planning to open a further eight to 10 of them this year.

Greggs first opened a driver-thru in 2017 in Salford, Manchester.

The drive-thrus allow customers to pick up their usual sausage rolls, doughnuts and more from the comfort of their car.
