Firms back Daily Express call to axe VAT on green products

They wrote to Boris Johnson warning that the tax means families risk being “priced out of the switch to green technology”. The bosses – including Ecotricity chief Dale Vince, Bulb’s founder Hayden Wood and Dr Nina Skorupska of the Renewable Energy Association – also said the tax cut would create thousands of jobs.

The Daily Express is campaigning for Zero for Zero – zero VAT on products with zero or near zero emissions.

Mr Vince said: “It’s great to see more businesses joining our Zero for Zero campaign. The more voices we have calling on government to apply zero VAT to the things that will help us get to zero carbon, the better.

“Taking tax off the good stuff in this way will unleash a wave of spending and investment, creating jobs and businesses as well as lowering our carbon emissions and our energy bills. Everybody wins.”

Scrapping VAT on an electric Renault Zoe would cut its price by £4,500, say the bosses.

Their letter calls for VAT to be axed on products such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, energy storage devices, solar panels, secondary and double glazing, low-carbon boilers and insulation.
