Ex-McDonalds worker explains secret menu, free burgers and weird ingredients

A former McDonald’s worker who spent two years working at the burger chain has revealed some of the secrets of the restaurant.

Emily Johnson decided to share some of the most common questions she’s been asked about a McDonald’s employee.

And, she added: “I think there are many common misconceptions about what goes on behind the scenes at the world-famous burger chain.”

So, whether it’s asking about the secret menu, what happens to breakfast food and why you can never get a milkshake she’s come out with the answers.

Writing for HullLive, Emily added: “McDonald's in the UK is usually split into franchises, all with different rules and goals.

“I have worked at two different franchises so this information is likely common to most but may not apply to all.”

Check out her answers below:

Is there a secret request menu?

Emily claims that there is no specific secret menu, but that lots of people would order off-menu.

She said: “Every so often a customer would come in and ask for a pot of pickles on their own – usually a pregnant woman with cravings!

“Depending on which employees are serving, some will give it out for free, others may charge 99p or say a flat-out no.

“There is also a hack in which customers ask for a double cheeseburger dressed as a Big Mac.”

As adding things like lettuce and Big Mac sauce are free you’ll get a similar sandwich for half the cost.

Why is the milkshake machine often not working?

The former staff member claimed that the milkshake machine is often down for one of three reasons.

It’s either because the cleaning cycle has been started at the wrong time – and it takes hours – or because it’s annoying to make them and the staff don’t have time.

Otherwise, during Covid no milkshake mix was delivered to UK stores.

And, occasionally someone puts McFlurry mix into the milkshake section of the machine and so it won’t work properly.

What happens to all the breakfast stuff after 11am?

We’ve all missed the breakfast time by a few minutes, but what happens to the uneaten McMuffins?

Emily noted: “It goes in the bin, unfortunately, but we would try to be as accurate as possible when cooking what we thought we would need.

“Hack: At Grimsby, if you turn up between 11am and 11.05am they will often offer you the leftover hash browns and McMuffins for free if there are some leftover.”

Are there any weird ingredients in the food?

The former staff member commented: “No, we would season burgers with standard salt and pepper and all the meat, fries, desserts, etc arrive frozen with no weird mystery ingredients to add.

“The veg arrives fresh and chilled apart from the onions that we would have to hydrate.”

What’s the worst order to get?

For the workers, Emily claims that the Filet o’ Fish is the worst thing to make.

Apparently, they’re ordered more rarely and so the fish sandwiches aren’t constantly being made like the nuggets and beef burgers.

Emily added: “You can't store food in the heating system for longer than 15 minutes so they would never be ready.

“It would be a huge inconvenience to put them in the fryer from frozen, steam the bun and wait five minutes for it to cook.

“This would always ruin the drive-thru times and cause a massive queue as well.”

Do staff get free burgers – which ones?

The former McDonald’s worker claims that you do get free food on your lunch break.

She said: “Salford would give you four points (main, side, drink, and dessert) for free and also give you free dips galore.

“Grimsby would give you points depending on how much food waste there was.”

Fascinating!
