Simon Cowell 'could have been paralysed' after breaking back
Simon Cowell could have been left paralysed after breaking his back by falling off his bike.
The X Factor boss, who is said to be recovering from his six-hour surgery, was testing out his new toy at his home in Malibu, California on Saturday when he came crashing off.
According to sources, television mogul Simon had a ‘very lucky’ escape as the impact from the accident narrowly missed his spinal cord.
‘I spoke to him before the surgery and he was in incredible, ridiculous amounts of pain and also in shock,’ a source said. ‘His back was broke in several places, but he is actually very lucky.
‘He fell flat on his back and the doctors say the impact missed his spinal cord by about a centimetre and it could have been a lot, lot more serious.’
The insider continued to The Mirror: ‘He was in surgery for six hours and they had to put a metal rod in his back and fix a number of things.
‘He is recovering in hospital now and we expect him to be there for a few days and then he will take things from there.
‘It is too early to say when he will be back on TV.’
Simon, 60, underwent the operation overnight last night and has had to have a number of fusions and metal rods put into his back.
A rep told Metro.co.uk: ‘Simon has broken his back in a number of places in a fall from his bike whilst testing a new electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu with his family.
‘He was taken to hospital where they operated overnight (Saturday) he’s under observation and is doing fine.’
The television star has been residing in California during the coronavirus pandemic with his partner, Lauren Silverman, their son Eric, six, and Lauren’s 14-year-old son Adam from a previous relationship.
