Richard Madeley, 64, and his wife Judy Finnigan, 72, tied the knot in 1986 and the couple has remained happily married for over 35 years. The broadcaster has now explained that it’s “instinctive” for people who have been together for a long time to know when they are getting on each other’s nerves.

The couple are known for spending a lot of time together as the duo previously presented This Morning together from the show’s inception in 1988 until 2001.

The small-screen stars later landed their own self-titled show called Richard and Judy, which aired for eight years until 2009.

Speaking about the couple’s life in lockdown, Richard explained that they both know when they are getting on each other’s nerves.

“We’ve been married a long time so without actually saying, ‘Oh, you’re getting on my nerves, I need space,’ we almost know instinctively,” he explained to Metro.co.uk.

“You start to see the warning signs. I think that’s probably true of a lot of older married couples.”

Richard also revealed that there are plans for the couple to work together again as he teased a new project.

He said: “We were having a conversation only yesterday about a project that might involve the two of us working together again.

“It wouldn’t be daily television like This Morning or The Richard And Judy Show, it would be something a bit gentler.”

The presenting couple walked down the aisle in 1986 when their son Jack Madeley was six months old, who is now 34, and their youngest daughter Chole Madeley, 33, arrived just months later.

Speaking on The Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast with Giovanna Fletcher, Richard revealed: “I look at Chloe as she was a sort of accident and she was conceived only a few months… when Jack was only a few months old.”

Judy shared: “We would have probably got married in 1984 if we could’ve done, but we got married in 1986.

“When our first child Jack was six months old, we had to wait until he was six months… we would’ve married earlier, and we had to wait for our divorces to come through and everything.”

“So we went ahead as I was in my mid-30s. Well by the time we got together I was beginning to be in my late 30s and I knew I wanted more children,” she added.

Richard was previously married to Lynda Hooley between 1977 and 1983.

Judy was with her first husband David Henshaw for 12 years, and they share twins Tom and Ben.

When the pair tied the knot at a Manchester registry office, they were unaware Judy was already pregnant with Chloe.

Richard shared: “We would later discover that Judy was in fact already pregnant with Chloe so actually all four of them were at the wedding which was great.”

Meanwhile, the former This Morning presenter has hinted he’ll be happy to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

Richard admitted if he ever got the phone call to sit alongside Susanna Reid he would consider it.

The TV host has stepped in as a replacement on the ITV news programme in Piers’ absence when the latter was a part of the show.
