Lorraine Kelly, 60, spoke candidly about her ITV colleague Phillip Schofield, 58. It comes after the This Morning presenter put out a statement on Instagram announcing that he was gay back in February.
The ITV veteran has been married to his wife Stephanie Lowe for 27 years and the couple share two daughters together; Ruby and Molly.
Lorraine praised her colleague for his “work ethic” but revealed the moment she was admittedly “left in shock”.
The Scottish-born presenter revealed when she saw Phillip last year he appeared “utterly exhausted”.
Lorraine explained: “I worked with Phillip Schofield for a couple of years on This Morning and he was a delight – a consummate professional and a truly generous co-host.
“I have always admired his work ethic, but I was shocked at the end of last year to see him looking thin, careworn and utterly exhausted.”
The ITV star admitted she knew things had gone “badly wrong” after he didn’t turn up to the studios one day for work.
“When he didn’t turn up for work one day, it was clear something was badly wrong,” Lorraine continued in her column to The Sun.
“What the rest of the world didn’t know was that he was fighting a highly personal battle and almost going under.”
Lorraine commended her fellow colleague for being vocal about his personal life.
She finished: “He hasn’t lost his sense of humour, joking that when he came out, the rest of the world went in, as it was all just before lockdown.
“Phillip is finding his way with the support of his wife and daughters, who love him dearly – and that’s all that really matters.”
In his new book, the presenter opened up about two different occasions where he decided to leave This Morning because he couldn’t cope.

The star had a meltdown on the way to ITV Studios and even got his driver to take him home.
A second time the presenter ran off screen to be sick.
Both incidents forced Phillip to recognise that he had to let the world know.
He wrote: “I had to come out. If I didn’t, the secret was going to give me a total breakdown… at best.
“You’re f*****g up everything and everyone and there’s no way to stop it.”
Back in February, Phillip released a statement telling fans he had been “coming to terms” with being gay.
He wrote on Instagram: “With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.
“This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home.”
Phillip added: “My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion, yet still I can’t sleep and there have been some very dark moments.”
