EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: What tempted new mum Eugenie out on the town? Princess and her husband have first big night out since becoming parents in February

Parties may be on hold until next month, but socialite Poppy Jamie managed to organise a jolly book launch nevertheless.

She held a dinner at Mayfair’s Isabel restaurant for friends including Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank.

It was the couple’s first big night out since the birth in February of their first child, a son, August.

They live at Frogmore Cottage, where they will soon be joined by Eugenie’s cousin, Prince Harry, who is returning to this country for the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue next week.

Also at the ‘Covid-safe’ event was Poppy’s bosom buddy, the actress Suki Waterhouse, and Suki’s sister, Immy.

Poppy says: ‘I had to practise talking because I think I’ve forgotten how to converse with people after being in lockdown for so long.’

Off the shelf! Mary, Queen of Shops, has a new lover

Heartbroken when she split from her wife, ‘Queen of Shops’ Mary Portas reveals she’s off the market again, having found love with another woman.

The 61-year-old television personality exchanged vows with fashion journalist Melanie Rickey in 2014, making them one of the first gay couples to do so after same-sex marriage was permitted in this country.

Speaking for the first time about the collapse of their 17-year union in 2018, Portas says: ‘I was on my own for the last three years. It was probably the toughest three years of my life.

‘I grieved the loss of my marriage and then Covid hit. I resettled where I live, and everything changed.

‘The last thing I was able to do was bring anyone into that. I had to be with me. It was very, very painful. It’s only in the last six to ten months that I’ve come through it.’

She adds: ‘I’m not single now, but I’m not going to say who I’m with. It’s unfair to them. They’re not in the public eye.’

Confirming she’s with a woman, Portas says she doesn’t like to label her sexuality.

Prior to Rickey, 49, she was married to a chemical engineer and Unilever executive, Graham Portas, for 14 years.

They have two grown-up children, while she and Melanie have a nine-year-old son, Horatio, after using Mary’s brother, Lawrence, as the biological father.

‘I married a man, and I married a woman, and I’m with a woman now,’ adds Portas. ‘I’ve been in love with two men in my life, and I’ve been in love with two women.

‘I don’t think it looks particularly great that I’ve got two failed marriages.

‘But they were some brilliant years, so I don’t see them as failure, I genuinely don’t. I’ve changed; I’m not the same person that I was, and that happens.

‘We can get so hung up on that. I’ve never really struggled with relationships, I don’t think. I’ve had pretty decent, long ones.’

Tat’s a new look for Karen from Outnumbered

Think your children are growing up fast?

Well, fans of the hit BBC comedy Outnumbered have been shocked by the drastic transformation of Ramona Marquez, who played the youngest Brockman, Karen.

Having dyed her hair blonde, Ramona — pictured, inset, with the show’s cast and now aged 20 — has shown off her taste for wacky jewellery, including a lion ring and metal chains around her neck, as well as a huge dragon tattoo on her bicep.

‘It was custom designed by me and the tattoo artist,’ she says. ‘It took about four hours.’

Boris Johnson’s former bruiser Dominic Cummings doesn’t suffer fools gladly, but he’s happy to accept criticism from his wife, journalist Mary Wakefield.

Yesterday, one of his Twitter followers said: ‘Mate, look, I like you, but can you please tweet in slightly more coherent sentences?

It just makes it easier for us all to make sense of what you’re on about.’ Cummings replied: ‘My wife just said [the] same, sorry.’

Princess Margaret’s close friend Anne Glenconner is fed up with people claiming Princess Diana was the first member of the Royal Family to transform attitudes to HIV sufferers.

‘Princess Margaret used to go to The Lighthouse, the place for young men with Aids, long before Diana,’ Lady Glenconner says.

‘We never went for the photographers, but she’d sit in their rooms, make them laugh.’ Lady Glenconner’s son, Henry, was diagnosed with Aids.

‘A lot of our friends suddenly couldn’t come and stay,’ but the Queen’s sister was ‘very, very supportive’, she says.

‘People were terrified of Aids then, but she would hug Henry.’

Acerbic historian David Starkey claims Boris Johnson is the new Henry VIII and Carrie his Anne Boleyn.

‘He’s just redecorated his apartments at vast expense,’ the Tudors expert says.

‘And he’s now onto his third marriage which, on a technicality, took place in Westminster Cathedral according to the Catholic rite, despite the Church’s disapproval of divorce,’ he says.

‘Like Anne, she’s made the transition from mistress to wife and quarrels with Dom [Cummings] over appointments along the way — though so far with the opposite result to her predecessor’s encounter with Tom [Cromwell].’

Trixie will be calling the midwife

Actress Helen George, who plays Trixie Franklin in the hugely popular BBC drama Call The Midwife, is pregnant.

The professor’s daughter, 37, shared this photograph yesterday of herself cradling her baby bump in a floral dress.

‘Baking number two,’ she confirms. ‘Due in December.’

George met her boyfriend, Jack Ashton, 38, when he joined the cast as the Rev Tom Hereward.

Their three-year-old daughter, Wren Ivy, was born three weeks early via elective caesarean section after Helen was diagnosed with ICP — a condition which can lead to complications for both mother and baby.
