Britney Spears, 39, took to Instagram to apologise to fans for telling them she was OK for the last two years. It comes after she gave a dramatic and moving testimony on Wednesday at a hearing, as she fought to end the legally binding guardianship. Appearing virtually at a court hearing in Los Angeles on Wednesday, this is the first time she’s spoken out since her lawyer filed to suspend it last year.
I apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years
The agreement has given her father Jamie Spears control of her life and finances for over a decade.
The pop sensation told Judge Brenda Penny in an emotional 24-minute testimony that she is forbidden from having more children, getting married or taking out her IUD, condemning her father and others who control the agreement of exploiting her, preventing her and forcing her to work.
Spears said she had “lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy” while under conservatorship, adding: “But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
Following the admission, she has since taken to social media for the first time since officially addressing her 2008 conservatorship, apologising to fans and saying she hid the reality of her life “because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me”.

She posted a picture of a young girl holding a teddy bear with an Albert Einstein quote about fairy tales.
Alongside the image, she captioned it: “I just want to tell you guys a little secret … I believe as people we all want the fairy tale life and by the way I’ve posted … my life seems to look and be pretty amazing … I think that’s what we all strive for !!!! That was one of my mother’s best traits … no matter how shitty a day was when I was younger … for the sake of me and my siblings she always pretended like everything was ok.
“I’m bringing this to people’s attention because I don’t want people to think my life is perfect because IT’S DEFINITELY NOT AT ALL … and if you have read anything about me in the news this week … you obviously really know now it’s not !!!!
“I apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years … I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me … but honestly who doesn’t want to capture there Instagram in a fun light !!!!”
She continued: “Believe it or not pretending that I’m ok has actually helped, so I decided to post this quote today because by golly if you’re going through hell … I feel like Instagram has helped me have a cool outlet to share my presence … existence … and to simply feel like I matter despite what I was going through and hey it worked … so I’ve decided to start reading more fairy tales!!!!”
During her testimony, she stated that her dad and others who have a part in the guardianship, should “be in jail”.
Jamie responded to his daughter’s claims with a statement in which he said: “He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain.
“Mr Spears loves his daughter very much.”
Last year, the singer said she was “afraid” of Jamie, and would not return to the stage while he managed her estimated £43 million estate.
The songstress also said: “I truly think this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”
Her finances and personal affairs became controlled by the conservatorship since 2008, when she suffered a series of mental breakdowns.
She told the judge she wants the agreement ended without a further medical assessment.
Britney’s plight has reached worl-wide fame and her boyfriend Sam Asghari, wore a Free Britney t-shirt ahead of her hearing midweek.
The 27-year-old posted the image on his Instagram alongside a lion emoji hours before she was scheduled to speak during the virtual appearance.
The #FreeBritney campaign was started by the singer’s fans who feel she should end her conservatorship.
Millions of celebrities and fans alike have joined forces to show their support for the Gimme More singer, including Mariah Carey and her ex Justin Timberlake.
