The Walking Dead is going to be finishing after AMC confirmed it was bringing its epic horror series to an end. The show is adapted from the Robert Kirkman graphic novels of the same name. Andrew Lincoln led the show for most of the decade it’s been on screens and despite no longer being part of the show, fans are still curious to know more about him.

How old is Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln?

Lincoln was born on 14 September 1973 which means he’s 47-years-old.

He was born in London but spent his early childhood in Hull, Yorkshire with the family later moving to Bath in Somerset.

The star’s original name was Andrew Clutterbuck but he was advised to change this for a stage name.

Lincoln trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and graduated in 1994.

He has a career dating back to the early 1990s after starring in the ground-breaking series This Life as Edgar ‘Egg’ Cook.

After a string of small roles, he went on to land a role in Channel 4 comedy series Teachers.

However, it was his part as the lovelorn Mark in Richard Curtis’ Christmas romcom extravaganza Love Actually, which saw his profile soar.

The scene in which Mark confessed his unrequited feelings to Keira Knightley’s Juliet has become iconic with Lincoln even reprising the role for a Comic Relief special.

Through the latter half of the 2000s, Lincoln featured in TV shows Afterlife and Strike Back before making the move to the US and auditioning for The Walking Dead.

Lincoln wasn’t the first choice for Rick with The Punisher’s Shane Johnson the favourite at the time.

At the time Lincoln was cast in The Walking Dead, he didn’t even have an agent in the USA but the programme-makers thought he brought a family man quality to the role.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video, The Walking Dead’s casting director Sharon Bialy said: “One of the most challenging roles to cast was Rick.”

Bialy went on to say: “We knew he was the leader and going to be going through so much.”

Adding: “Interestingly, Jon Bernthal came in and read for both Rick and Shane.”

However, in the end, Bernthal was cast as Shane rather than Rick with the producers going back to the drawing board.

Fellow casting direction Gohar Gazazyan went on to say: “Rick was of course the lead of the show. In an interesting way, this pilot really has a lot of Rick in it.”

Adding: “Casting Rick was the obvious person to start with. We did a lot of searching. We auditioned a lot of wonderful actors.”

Another casting director on the show Sherry Thomas explained: “There’s not a lot of dialogue in that pilot episode, so you had to immediately connect with the character whoever this was going to be.”

Gazazyan said she started going through actors whose work she’d liked when she happened across Lincoln.

The casting directors got in touch with Lincoln’s agent and asked for a self-tape audition.

Bialy said “something clicked” when Rick was talking to Morgan Jones (played by Lennie James) during his audition.

The producers felt Lincoln’s performance had the heroic qualities they were looking for and guide the audience through his post-apocalyptic nightmare.

The Walking Dead season 10 will return to AMC on February 28 and Fox UK on March 1
