Skincare breakfast: The new TikTok food trend promising glowing skin
They say you are what you eat, but apparently chowing down on crispy salmon skin has the opposite effect on your complexion – at least if TikTok is to be believed.
Skincare aficionados on the platform have expanded their routines from cleansing, toning and moisturising to mealtimes, tailoring the foods they eat to improve their skin from within.
Wellness influencer Alice C Sun’s post, where she claimed to have perfected the art of the ‘skincare breakfast’ has been viewed over 560,000 times, and hundreds of other creators are now getting in on the trend.
Showing off a meal-prepped tray of goodies, Alice revealed she starts her day with miso soup, crispy skin-on salmon fillets, kimchi, shredded cabbage and rice, alongside cucumber topped with miso paste.
According to the US-based digital marketer, who has dry, sensitive skin, the salmon provides ‘a protein source that’s hydrating and anti-inflammatory’, while the miso soup offers additional hydration and ‘basically everything else’ has ‘gut-friendly probiotics’.
Alice also recommends bone broth to get a glow, okra to heal acne, grass jelly to calm inflammation, and almond milk chia pudding to soothe sun damage (the latter, it must be said, will do little to counteract long stints in harsh UV rays).

A number of other TikTokers have also shared their own recipes for a skincare breakfast, from turmeric and ginger shots to overnight oats made with probiotic yoghurt and cinnamon stewed apples.
The majority of videos show fruit, veg, milk or dairy free alternatives, supplements or protein powders, fats in the form of eggs, nut butters or olive oil, and pulses, grains, seeds or nuts.
‘My skin has never been so glowy,’ said one fan of skincare breakfasts, while another said switching up her diet in this way had ‘made a huge difference’ to her complexion.
Apparently, however, it’s not quite as simple as it seems.

Consultant dermatologist and author of Skintelligent, Dr Natalia Spierings, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘There is no evidence in the science to support the use of any specific food to benefit skin.’
Rather than eating specific foods to get specific skincare results, she recommends a more holistic approach.
‘Generally speaking, we all know what is “healthy” and what is “unhealthy”- such as avoid processed foods or too much sugar,’ says Dr Natalia.
‘Eating too much sugar is not going to impact your skin in the short term but in the long term it has a huge impact on your general health and if your general health is poor, your skin almost certainly will show that in being lacklustre, dull and so on.’

Although some claim that those with acne should avoid dairy, for example, she refutes this, arguing your lifestyle as a whole is what impacts your skin over fads and ‘hacks’.
Dr Natalia adds: ‘Stay generally healthy – sleep enough, manage stress levels, exercise regularly, eat a predominantly healthful diet of whole unprocessed foods low in sugar. That is just common sense.
‘But there is no specific food or thing someone can do to improve their skin “from within” – aside from stop smoking if you smoke.’
Unfortunately, there’s no magic bullet for better skin (yet, anyway), meaning skincare breakfasts – while potentially tasty – aren’t going to clear your breakouts or miraculously cure your eczema.
Your best bet is to eat well, look after yourself in general, and always remember to take your makeup off each night. From there, you can try experimenting with what works for you.
